DELEGATION EXPLAINED:
Recently, one of the nurses at an agency we provide med training for seemed confused about the Ohio DODD delegated nursing requirements. She assumed that the nurse (me) teaching the course was the delegating nurse. When I explained the process she was shocked. The RN Trainer teaching the course(s) is not the delegating nurse. Nor can an LPN delegate nursing tasks independently.
I went on to explain that an RN is required to do the initial consumer assessment in-person to ensure their health is stable enough for a DSP to be trained to either give insulin injections or medications through a g/j tube. Only then, can the RN approve an LPN teach and delegate approved tasks to a DSP who has certification 2 or 3.
So, for patient safety the RN is required to assess the consumer for stability upon admission, re-admission after a hospital stay and annually. All of this is required to be documented and available upon request. This is not done by the nurse teaching the class.
