Course Overview
Certification 3 must be renewed every year for DSPs who administer insulin or other prescribed injections for individuals with metabolic disorders.
This renewal course includes:
- A 1-hour online refresher module, taught by an Ohio DODD-approved RN Trainer
- A required hands-on skills check, completed with either:
- The Delegating Nurse (agency), or
- An RN Trainer, upon request
DSPs must complete both components to maintain Certification 3 and continue performing injection tasks safely and legally.
Who Needs This Renewal?
This course is required for DSPs who:
- Administer insulin injections
- Support individuals with diabetes or other metabolic disorders
- Use insulin pens or syringes
- Perform injection-based medication tasks
- Monitor for blood sugar-related complications
DSPs may renew up to 60 days after the expiration date.

Module 1 – Review of Diabetes & Metabolic Disorders
- Type 1 vs Type 2 diabetes
- Insulin in daily care
- Common metabolic disorders requiring injections
Module 2 – Insulin & Injection Administration Review
- Safe preparation of insulin
- Dose verification
- Correct injection technique
- Pen vs syringe administration
- Timing and care plan adherence
Module 3 – Monitoring & Responding to Blood Sugar Changes
- Understanding blood glucose ranges
- Recognizing hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia
- Emergency response procedures
- When to notify the Delegating Nurse
Module 4 – Safety & Infection Control
- Sharps disposal
- Preventing contamination

Skills Check Requirement (Annual)
Ohio DODD requires a hands-on competency assessment every year for Certification 3 renewal.
DSPs may complete the skills check with:
Option 1 — Delegating Nurse (Agency) Preferred
- Most agencies use this option
- Official 2 page application form: email to [email protected]
- Evaluator observes and documents competency
- Must complete the official Certification 3 skills check form included in the course
- No additional fee from our office
Option 2 — RN Trainer
- Available upon request (limited time due to in-person training)
- Ideal when the agency lacks an internal Delegating Nurse
- On-site or scheduled sessions

Renewal Requirements
To maintain Certification 3, DSPs must:
- Complete the online renewal module
- Complete a skills check with a Delegating Nurse or RN Trainer
- Submit required forms to the agency RN/Supervisor (application, skills check)
- Email to us for entry into MAIS
DSPs may not perform injection tasks after expiration. 60 days to renew certification.
