Course Overview

Ohio DODD requires DSPs to renew Certification 1 every year. Renewal includes:

  1. Completing a 2-hour online refresher course taught by an Ohio DODD-approved RN Trainer
  2. Completing a skills check with a certified, experienced Supervisor, Manager or Nurse (LPN or RN)
  3. Submitting the Official 2-Page DODD Renewal Application and the completed skills check to us for MAIS entry. Email [email protected]

This course provides the required annual review of safe medication administration practices, documentation, and procedures.

DSPs may complete the relevant skills check for what staff actually do at work with:

  • A certified Supervisor or Manager
  • An LPN
  • An RN
  • An RN Trainer (upon request due to limited time between teaching in-person)

RN Trainer does not need to conduct the skills check for renewal.


Who Needs This Training?

This course is for DSPs who:

  • Currently hold a valid Certification 1 (or expired within 60 days)
  • Are due for their annual renewal within 3 months
  • Need to meet DODD Medication Administration Rule 5123 requirements
  • Provide routine medication administration as part of their role

DSPs may take the renewal course up to 60 days past their expiration date.

Module 1 – Review of Medication Administration Basics

  • The role of the DSP
  • Responsibilities under Ohio DODD rules
  • Review of Certification levels and delegation

Module 2 – Medication Forms & Safe Administration

  • Oral, topical, inhaled, and other routine medications
  • The Six Rights
  • Preventing errors
  • Reading and understanding medication labels

Module 3 – Documentation & MAR Accuracy

  • When and how to document
  • Avoiding omissions
  • Identifying errors
  • When to notify a supervisor or nurse

Module 4 – Recognizing Reactions & When to Report

  • Allergic reactions
  • Side effects
  • Medication refusals
  • Emergency situations

Skills Check Requirement

The Ohio DODD Medication Administration Rule requires a skills demonstration every year as part of renewal.

This skills check must be completed with:

  • A med certified, experienced Supervisor
  • A med certified, experienced Manager
  • An LPN or RN

The RN Trainer is NOT required to complete the skills check for renewals.
Your agency may perform the skills check internally for skills DSPs actually do at work (minimally oral med admin).

The evaluator must complete:

Documentation Provided

After successfully completing the online course and exam, agencies receive:

  • Copy of the Ohio DODD issued Certification 1 Renewal

Requirements for Renewal

DSPs must:

  1. Complete the online course
  2. Complete a skills check using agency procedures
  3. Submit both required forms to their agency RN or Nurse Supervisor
  4. Maintain documentation in their personnel file

DSPs cannot administer medications after expiration until renewal is fully completed.
