Are There Online Options for Medication Administration Training in Ohio?
Yes—some parts of Ohio’s Medication Administration Training can be completed online, depending on the course type and certification level.
Category 1 (Initial Certification)
This course requires a minimum of 14 hours of training and must include in-person instruction and a hands-on skills check by a certified RN Trainer. However, some providers offer blended formats—where classroom content is delivered online, and the in-person portion is reserved for skills demonstration and final evaluation.
Check with your training provider to see if they offer a hybrid (online + in-person) option.
Renewal Courses
Renewal for Category 1 can often be completed entirely online, as long as it includes:
- A review of medication administration principles
- Verification of competency
- Any updates to DODD rules or best practices
Annual Required Provider Training
DODD also allows all 8 hours of the annual required training for certified providers to be completed online via platforms like:
- DODD MyLearning
- Approved third-party training websites
In short: While hands-on portions are always required for initial certification, renewals and annual provider training can often be done fully online—making it more flexible for busy DSPs and providers.
