What Are the Different Categories of Medication Administration Certification for DSPs in Ohio?
Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) in Ohio who support individuals with developmental disabilities may be certified to administer medications through specialized training overseen by the Ohio Department of Developmental Disabilities (DODD). There are three main certification categories, each designed for different levels of responsibility:
Category 1 – Basic Medication Administration
This certification allows DSPs to administer:
- Oral medications
- Topical treatments
- Inhaled medications
- And perform 13 health-related activities (like applying ointments or using a glucometer)
Category 2 – Feeding Tube Medication Administration
With additional nurse delegation, this category permits DSPs to give medications and nutrition through:
- Gastrostomy tubes (G-tubes)
- Jejunostomy tubes (J-tubes)
Category 3 – Insulin and Injectable Treatments
Also under nurse delegation, this certification allows DSPs to:
- Administer insulin
- Give injections for metabolic glycemic disorders, such as diabetes
Each category builds on the last and requires both classroom instruction and a skills check by a certified RN Trainer.
If you’re a DSP looking to expand your skills and provide more support, earning these certifications can open doors and deepen your impact in care settings.
