Course Overview
Certification 2 Renewal is required every year for DSPs who administer medications or fluids through a Gastrostomy (G-tube) or Jejunostomy (J-tube) tube. This Ohio DODD-approved blended course includes:
- A 1-hour online refresher, taught by an RN Trainer
- A hands-on skills check, which may be completed by:
- The Delegating Nurse (agency RN/LPN), or
- An RN Trainer, if the agency requests this option
DSPs must complete both the online course and the annual skills verification to remain compliant and continue performing G/J tube tasks.
Who Needs This Renewal?
This course is for DSPs who currently perform:
- Medication administration or feeding through a G-tube or J-tube
- Water flushes
- Enteral feedings
- Tube care tasks authorized under Certification 2
DSPs may complete renewal up to 60 days after their expiration date.
What This Renewal Course Covers
Module 1 – Review of G/J Tube Basics
- Purpose of G-tubes and J-tubes
- Common reasons individuals require enteral access
- Anatomy overview and placement considerations
Module 2 – Medication Administration Refresher
- Preparing medications for enteral administration
- Dilution, crushing, and contraindicated medications
- Safe administration technique
- Preventing clogging and complications
Module 3 – Water Flush & Enteral Feeding Procedures
- When to flush
- Best practices for preventing tube blockage
- Gravity feed vs syringe feed review
Module 4 – Safety, Infection Control, and Reporting
- Redness, irritation, leaking, or displacement
- When to stop a procedure
- When to contact the Delegating Nurse
- Documentation expectations
Skills Check Requirement (Annual)
In addition to the online refresher, Ohio DODD requires a hands-on skills verification for Certification 2 renewals.
DSPs may complete the skills check with either:
Option 1 — Delegating Nurse (Agency RN or LPN) Preferred Method
Most agencies choose this option. The Delegating Nurse must:
- Observe required tasks
- Use the official Certification 2 skills check form
- Document competency and sign the evaluation
This option provides convenience and no additional fee from our office.
Option 2 — RN Trainer
Agencies may request skills checks performed by our RN Trainer.

Agencies receive:
- Copy of Ohio DODD issued Certification 2 Renewal
Course Length & Format

Renewal Requirements
To maintain Certification 2 status, DSPs must:
- Agency completes the 2 page official Ohio DODD application
- Complete the online renewal course
- Complete the hands-on skills check using the form supplied in the course with an RN Trainer or the Delegating Nurse (sign and include RN #)
- Submit completed forms to our email [email protected] for entry into MAIS by our RN Trainer
DSPs must not perform G/J tube tasks after certification expires. Current Certification 1 required to perform any Certification 2 work.
