Hands-on, RN-led competency training for DSPs who provide medication administration or nutrition support through a G-tube or J-tube.
Course Overview
Certification 2 authorizes a Direct Support Professional (DSP) to administer medications and certain nutrition or hydration through a Gastrostomy or Jejunostomy tube, as outlined in Ohio Administrative Code 5123.
This 4-hour in-person course covers the required knowledge, safety procedures, and hands-on demonstrations needed for DSPs to competently perform G/J tube procedures under the supervision of an Ohio DODD-approved RN Trainer.
DSPs must complete this training before performing any tube-related medication or feeding tasks in a service setting.
Who Needs This Certification?
This course is required for DSPs or Independent Providers who will perform any of the following tasks related to a G-tube or J-tube:
- Administering medications through the tube
- Providing water flushes
- Administering enteral feedings
- Troubleshooting common tube issues
- Assisting individuals with device care and safety
Participants must already hold a current, active Certification 1.
What This Course Covers
Module 1 – Understanding Gastrostomy & Jejunostomy Tubes
- Purpose and use of G-tubes and J-tubes
- Common medical conditions requiring tubes
- Tube types and equipment overview
- Placement and anatomy basics
Module 2 – Medication & Fluid Administration
- Preparing medications for tube administration
- Dilution, crushing, and verifying suitability
- Safe administration steps
- Preventing clogging and complications
- Proper water flush procedures
Module 3 – Enteral Nutrition Basics
- Formula preparation
- Gravity vs syringe feedings
- Timing, documentation, and monitoring
- Recognizing intolerance or adverse reactions
Module 4 – Infection Control & Safety
- Hand hygiene
- Equipment cleaning
- Early warning signs of infection
- When to notify the nurse or supervisor
Module 5 – Troubleshooting & Emergency Procedures
- Tube dislodgement
- Leakage, blockage, or redness
- Recognizing when to stop a procedure
- Reporting requirements and documentation
Hands-On Skills Demonstration
Each DSP will perform required tasks on simulation equipment under RN supervision, including:
- Preparing and administering medication
- Performing water flushes
- Administering formula
- Documenting correctly
- Demonstrating safe technique
Skills must be completed competently to earn certification.

Certification & Documentation
Upon successful completion, the agency receives:
- Copy of Ohio DODD issued certification for Category 2
All paperwork is compliant with Ohio DODD Medication Administration Rule 5123.
