Certification 1: Initial Medication Administration Training

Ohio DODD-Approved Course – RN Trainer Led
Train new DSPs to safely administer medications in compliance with Ohio Administrative Code 5123.


Course Overview

Certification 1 (Initial) is required for all Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) who will administer medications under Ohio DODD’s Medication Administration System. This course provides the essential knowledge, safety standards, and hands-on skills needed to competently administer medications in home and community-based settings.

Your DSP will complete the required 14 hours training with our RN Trainer. Upon successful completion, the employee receives their official Certification 1 through the Ohio DODD.


Who Needs This Training?

This course is for:

  • New DSPs who have never been certified
  • DSPs returning after their certification expired (after 60 day grace period)
  • Agency staff who provide direct care and may administer medications
  • Independent Providers who must meet DODD compliance requirements

Participants must:

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Have a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Read and write English at a functional level
  • Meet employer-required background checks or screenings

Skills Check Requirement

Ohio DODD mandates a hands-on demonstration for Certification 1.
After completing the online modules, the DSP must:

  1. Participate in an in-person skills check with the RN Trainer
  2. Demonstrate proper medication administration in a classroom setting
  3. Complete required documentation (transcription exercise)
  4. Achieve competency under the supervision of our RN Trainer


Certificate and Documentation

Upon successful completion of both the online training and the skills check, the agency receives:

  • Copy of the Certification issued by Ohio DODD sent via email

Agencies must maintain this documentation in the employee record for DODD compliance.
